Goals: Develop skills of various types of interpretation (consecutive, bilingual, etc.) and written translation skills. To prepare for the international Cambridge examination Certificate in Advanced English (CAE).
Course description
The course is designed for upper-intermediate and advanced users of English with higher education. Class size – 10-12 students. Enrollment is based on interview results. The course is integrated part of preparation for the international Cambridge examination Certificate in Advanced English (CAE).
Level needed
Upper-Intermediate, Advanced levels. Interview comprises the following: the Russian language (process a printed text – annotation or summary of the text); the English language (sight translation, written annotation; listening – interpretation of an audio recording).
Exam structure
Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) has 5 parts:
Reading: you will need to understand texts from fiction and non-fiction books, magazines, journals and newspapers.
Writing: you will have to show your ability to process information from various types of input to produce different types of writing such as letters, articles, reports and reviews.
Listening: you will need to understand the meaning of a range of spoken material, including lectures, news programmes and public announcements.
Use of English: you will be given tasks which show how well you can control your grammar and vocabulary.
Speaking: you will be tested on your ability to participate in different types of interaction (with the examiner, another candidate and by yourself).
What you will have at the end of the course
Rhetoric: know rules of the Russian language; be able to edit texts; be able to process printed texts; master oratorical skills.
Theory of translation: understand translation as a kind of interlinguistic and intercultural communication; know the objects and the purposes of translation, strategy and tactics of professional translation and be able to use them practically; know translation terminology; know linguistic peculiarities of translation.
Listening: be able to understand and translate oral speech; develop articulation skills for translation; know means of development of short term and long term memory; be able to shift from one language to another quickly; be able to combine semantic structures of two languages; be able to use interlinguistic and intralingual transformation; develop basic skills of translation notation; develop professional oral speech skills; develop interpreter’s professional ethics; be able to organize work of an interpreter; be able to interpret quite complicated audio materials from English into Russian using shorthand; be able to interpret dialogs containing a lot of information; be able to write summaries of audio materials; be able to summarize orally.
Simultaneous translation: master speaking skills in different conditions of oral communication in situations of coinciding of speech operations of various kinds; be able to interpret simultaneously monological texts in the sphere of social economics, general culture and macroeconomics from English into Russian and back.
Written translation from English into Russian: master skills of processing texts in the sphere of social economics, general culture and macroeconomics, including making annotations and summaries.
Written translation from Russian into English: master skills of processing texts in the sphere of social economics, general culture and macroeconomics.
CAE preparation: express yourself fluently; use English flexibly for social, professional and academic purposes; understand complex opinions; produce clear, well structured and detailed pieces of writing.

Course duration
1 academic year (2 semesters) – 408 academic hours of class work and 96 hours of independent work.

Three times a week at 19.00. Each lesson lasts 4 academic hours.
