Goals: To eliminate gaps, enhance and improve knowledge of the English language. To prepare for the international Cambridge examination IGCSE English as a Second Language.
Course description
This programme is for 7-9 year schoolchildren. Actually the programme forms an integrated part of the IGCSE (English as a Second Language) Preparation. The qualification reflects the widespread use of English in education, commerce and entertainment.
Level needed
Knowledge of the English language at the level of 7-8 forms of secondary schools.
Exam structure
IGCSE English as a Second Language has 3 parts:
Oral Communication: you will have to speak on a certain (not known in advance) topic not longer than 10-12 minutes.
Reading & Writing: you will have to fulfill several tasks based on texts, make some notes, produce several pieces of writing (summary, compositions, letters).
Listening: you will need to understand the meaning of a number of recorded spoken material, including announcements and discussions about everyday life.
What you will have at the end of the course
learn how to use English effectively in various types of situations and English-speaking environments; achieve a level of practical communication ideal for everyday use, which will also form the basis for further, more in-depth language study.
Listening
- understand the main idea of authentic texts of the Pre-Intermediate level;
- emphasize key information, confirm or refute given statements on the text content.
Speaking
- monologic speech based on the familiar vocabulary must contain the speaker’s own attitude to the topic under discussion;
- ability to make a dialog using spoken vocabulary and familiar subjects vocabulary (dialogic speech).
Reading
- read authentic texts to understand the main idea of the text;
- read to find specific information in the text
Writing
write application forms, post cards, private letters, brief compositions on familiar subjects (80 words).
Course duration
2 academic years (4 semesters) – 132 academic hours.
Completion documents
Certificate of completion of the “English for Teenagers course” at the Cambridge English Centre; the University of Cambridge Certificate IGCSE English as a Second Language; Certificate of advanced training “The English language and intercultural communication”.
Time-table
The course starts in October, ends in May. Summer is a period of vacations.
The studies are held twice a week (weekdays) at 15.30 or 17.20. Each lesson lasts 2 academic hours.
